Carriage Layouts

​​​Below are diagrams of the main carriage types used on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, along with doorway, aisle, and facility information. 

Carriages are regularly rotated due to operational requirements, so the layouts shown may differ on your travel day.

Every service includes an accessible carriage. Accessibility details include accessible facilities, seats, spaces, and areas for assistance animals.

Gold Class carriage

Gold Class seats

This carriage is only available on our Gold Class Service – Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class.

This carriage contains 28 Gold Class seats. Seats are numbered from 1 to 28, with seats 1 through 20 located to one side of the carriage in sets of two.

Seats 21 through 28 are single seats located along the opposite side of the carriage.

There are an equal number of forward and backward facing club style lounge seats.

General Carriage Facilities

A unisex toilet is located at the end of the carriage behind seats 1 and 2.

Aisle, Corridor and Door Widths

External door width: 515mm

Aisle width between seats: between 480mm and 590mm

Gold Class seats

This carriage is only available on our Gold Class service – Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class.

This carriage contains 28 Gold Class seats. Seats are numbered from 1 to 28, with seats 1 through 20 located to one side of the carriage in sets of two.

Seats 21 through 28 are single seats located along the opposite side of the carriage.

There are an equal number of forward and backward facing club style lounge seats.

General Carriage Facilities

A unisex toilet is located at the end of the carriage behind seats 1 and 2.

External door width: 515mm

Aisle width between seats: between 480mm and 590mm

Travelling with an assistance animal

Seats 17 and 19 may be booked for customers travelling with an assistance animal. These seats are located at one end of the carriage.

  • If seat 17 is booked, aisle seat 18 will be held to provide floor space to comfortably accommodate an assistance animal.
  • If seat 19 is booked, aisle seat 20 will be held to provide floor space to comfortably accommodate an assistance animal.

Heritage Class

Our Heritage Class carriages contain between 30 and 43 seats. Configuration is generally a three (3) person bench seat, with a small number of two (2) person bench seats at the ends of some carriages.

There are generally an equal number of backward and forward facing bench seats throughout each carriage.

Carriages are regularly rotated due to operational requirements, so the layouts shown may differ on your travel day.

Note: A carriage with accessible facilities is available on all services to customers who require it. This carriage has Gold Class seating however is charged at the Heritage Class fare. Customers who wish to receive the Gold Class service will need to pay the applicable upgrade fare. Gold Class food and beverage service is only available on the 9:55am departure from Freshwater, and the 3:30pm departure from Kuranda. Carriage Facilities

A unisex toilet is located approximately every two (2) carriages.

Aisle, Corridor and Door Widths

External door widths: between 500mm and 640mm

Aisle width between seats: between 480mm and 545mm

Travelling with an assistance animal

There are seating locations with space to accommodate assistance animals in Heritage Class. The configuration of the seats for customers travelling with an assistance animal is a bench seat.

If a booking is made in one seat the rest of the bench is blocked to ensure adequate floor space. There are two (2) bench seats allocated for this purpose, located at one end of the carriage next to the toilet.​

Carriage with accessible seats, accessible spaces, facilities and storage space

A carriage with accessible facilities is available at the Heritage Class rate on all services to customers who require it. However Gold Class food and beverage service is only available on the 9:55am departure from Freshwater, and the 3:30pm departure from Kuranda. Customers who wish to receive the Gold Class service will need to pay the applicable Gold Class upgrade fare.

These carriages contain 8 seats and 4 accessible spaces. Seats are numbered 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 18 and 19 with four accessible spaces nearby seats 18 and 19. Accessible spaces are numbered 16, 17, 20 and 21. Seats 18 and 19 can swivel to face the opposite direction (e.g. seat 18 can face either seat 13 or accessible space 16 and seat 19 can swivel to face accessible space 17).

Carriage Facilities

An accessible unisex toilet and baby change facility including signage with raised text and braille and grab rails is located at the end of the carriage closest to the accessible spaces 20 and 21.

External door width: 1410mm (double doors)

Aisle width between seats: 710mm

Accessibility Information

Accessible Seats

Accessible seats are available, including for people transferring into the seat from a mobility device. These are numbered 18, 19, 10 and 8 and are located near the accessible spaces. 

If you transfer to a seat, please be aware that club style lounge seating has an arched shape back and fixed arm rests which cannot be moved or adjusted. Seats 18 and 19 can swivel to face the accessible space.

The aisle width between Accessible Seats 18 and 19 is 1180mm then narrows to an aisle width of 640mm.

  • A carer travelling with a customer who is booked in Accessible Seat 18 will be allocated across from them in seat 13.
  • A carer travelling with a customer booked in Accessible Seat 19 will be allocated across from them into seat 14.
  • A carer travelling with a customer booked in Accessible Seat 10 will be allocated adjacent into seat 9.
  • A carer travelling with a customer booked in Accessible Seat 8 will be allocated adjacent into seat 7.

Mobility devices can be stored in an Accessible Space which is included in the Accessible Seat booking.

Accessible Spaces

This carriage has four Accessible Spaces for customers to travel in or store a mobility device such as a wheelchair or mobility scooter. These are labelled 16, 17, 20 and 21 and are located near the Accessible Seats and the Accessible toilet. 

These spaces are available to customers when the Accessible Seats (18,19,10 and 8) are added to their booking.

  • When Accessible Seat 18 is booked, Accessible Space 16 will be allocated.
  • When Accessible Seat 19 is booked, Accessible Space 17 will be allocated.
  • When Accessible Seat 10 is booked, Accessible Space 20 will be allocated.
  • When Accessible Seat 8 is booked, Accessible Space 21 will be allocated.

Accessible Space Dimensions:

Mobility Device size restrictions apply. In general, these dimension limits are 750mm wide by 1100mm long.
